5 Stains You Didn’t Know You Could Get Out of Your Carpet

Cleaning paint out of carpet

Carpet stains can be a real pain to get out. The good news is that if you tackle them quickly by using items commonly found around your house and following these steps below, you should be able to remove even the most stubborn stains from your carpet. Here are some removal tips from your trusted local carpet cleaning business to help you get rid of five stains you may not even know can come out of your carpet.

Paint

First, you must determine what kind of paint you have, as the removal method will vary by ingredient. There are oil, latex, and water-based paints.

  • Oil Paint Stain Removal
  • If the paint is wet: Use a needle or pin to break up the stain without damaging the fibers.
  • If the paint is dry: Use a steamer to soften the paint and proceed with the step mentioned above.
  • Latex Paint Stain Removal
  • If the paint is wet: blot to remove as much as possible. If you use a scrubbing motion, it will push that stain further into the carpet.
  • Create a solution by mixing one cup of lukewarm water and one teaspoon of mild dishwashing detergent.
  • Use a rag or paper towel with your solution to blot away the stain, starting from the outside and working your way in.
  • After the area completely dries, vacuum.
  • Water-based Paint Stain Removal
  • If the paint is wet: Blot the stain with a damp paper towel. If you use a scrubbing motion, it will push the stain further down into the carpet.
  • If the paint is dry: Mix a solution of one cup of hot water and one tablespoon of mild dish detergent.
  • Apply the solution to the stain and wait a few minutes for the paint to soften.
  • Once softened, use a pin or knife to shave the paint. Continue to add more of the solution as you shave.
  • If the paint is not softening, use a handheld steamer while using your knife or pin.

Carpet Messes

Wax

  • Use a butter knife to scrape up any loose wax. Vacuum the wax chunks you're able to loosen up.
  • Get a damp cotton towel, fold it in half and place it on the stain. Use an iron set high on the towel for 10 seconds. Repeat until the wax is gone. If the towel dries up before that, dampen it.
  • Spray carpet cleaner on the stain. Use a spoon in a downward motion to scrub it into the carpet.
  • Let the carpet air-dry.

Blood

  • If the stain has dried, use a soft brush to scrape away loose matter.
  • Create a solution mixing one tablespoon of scent-free liquid, hand dishwashing detergent, and two cups of cold water.
  • Dampen a clean white cloth with the solution and blot. Repeat until all the blood is absorbed.
  • Dampen a sponge with cold water and press into the spot.
  • Blot dry with a clean towel.
  • If the stain is stubborn and remains, use a solution of one tablespoon of ammonia and half a cup of warm water with a sponge to blot the stain until it is removed. Use a clean sponge with just cold water. Finally, blot dry.

Soda

  • Get a clean towel and blot up as much soda as possible.
  • Create a solution mixing two cups of warm water, one tablespoon of unscented liquid hand dishwashing detergent, and one tablespoon of white vinegar.
  • With a new clean white towel or cloth, get it wet with the solution, apply a little at a time and blot away. Repeat until the stain disappears
  • Blot with a sponge dipped in cold water.
  • Blot dry.

Urine

  • If the stain is still wet, blot the excess moisture with a paper towel.
  • Make a solution of ¼ teaspoon of liquid dishwashing detergent and one cup of warm water. Note: If you use laundry detergent or dish soap, they may contain chemicals such as bleach or lanolin that can damage your carpet.
  • Spray the solution directly on the stain.
  • Use a clean cotton towel or paper towels to blot away the solution.
  • Rinse the spot with warm water; if a stain remains, repeat steps 1-5.
  • If the stain is still stubborn, make a solution of two tablespoons of ammonia and one cup of water. Blot the stain with the solution, rinse and repeat if necessary.
